Classic Movie Review: Let the Right One In (2008)

January 24, 2010 in Movie Reviews

[Just looking through my movie reviews, I noticed that I inexplicably left out one of the best films I saw when I was over in the UK last year.  The film is a little old now to be reviewing it as a new film, so I'm going to review it as a 'classic'.]

Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) is a 2008 Swedish film that was released to much critical acclaim, won a bunch of awards, and has attracted a cult following.  I am usually somewhat wary of such foreign films because they do tend to get over-hyped, but thankfully, this one is entirely worthy of the praise.

Without giving too much away, Let the Right One In tells the story of Oskar, a bullied young boy living in the suburbs of Stockholm in 1982, and Eli, a mysterious, pale young girl who moves in next door with her father.  The film is an unconventional horror-romance – where the horror is genuinely creepy and frightening, and the romance is heartfelt and strangely, sweet.

Directed by Tomas Alfredson and based on the best-selling book by John Ajvide Lindqvist, Let the Right One In is freakishly atmospheric.  It must be a combination of setting the film in the beautiful,  icy-cold Swedish winter and the finely-paced direction of Alfredson, who shows you just enough blood and gore to get your heart racing without making it seem gratuitous.

Many have said that Let the Right One In is Sweden’s answer to Twilight – well, that’s a bit of an insult to the former.  Don’t get me wrong, I quite like Twilight, but Let the Right One In one of those rare horror gems capable of lingering in your mind even years down the track.  There are numerous scenes in the film (and one in particular) where the imagery has been etched onto my brain forever.

4.5 stars out of 5!

[PS: Sadly, the film is being remade by Hollywood as 'Let Me In'.  It will be directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and the setting will be moved to a small New Mexico townOskar will be renamed Owen and will be played by Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road).  I sincerely hope it will be good.]

Movie Review: Up in the Air (2009)

January 23, 2010 in Movie Reviews

When I first heard about George Clooney’s new film Up in the Air, I thought it was the sequel to the 1994 basketball comedy The Air Up There starring Kevin Bacon.

Well, not as such.

The story revolves around Ryan Bingham (George Clooney), a man with a very unique job which I won’t divulge, but I will say it does require him to be ‘up in the air’ a lot.  Despite having to use his mouth for a living, Bingham shies away from human connection.  Enter Alex (Vera Farmiga) and Natalie (Anna Kendrick), two women who will turn his life upside down and make him question his life choices.

Up in the Air is the real deal – interesting premise, terrific script, great performances; warm, funny and very human – just about everything you could ask for in an A-grade drama comedy.  It’s not the type of film that will make you go ‘wow’, blow your mind or change your life, but it’s a film voters of awards will love (and from the awards it has already received, evidently so).

Up in the Air is co-written and directed by Jason Reitman, director of Juno and Thank You For Smoking.  If you have seen one or both of those films, then you’ll have an idea of the style and feel Reitman injects into Up in the Air.  It is a film dealing with serious issues and tragic situations, but somehow there are plenty of great laughs – certainly more than I expected. Full credit goes to Reitman and I have a feeling an Oscar nomination is coming his way shortly.

As for the performances – I’ve never been a huge fan of George Clooney because of that smug, dickish vibe he constantly gives off, but I have to admit it works perfectly here.  He is charming and funny and he makes you believe Ryan Bingham is real person.  Vera Farmiga, on the other hand, I am a big fan of, so I have nothing but praises for her subtle, believable performance.  And there’s the always-welcome Jason Bateman, who offers his usual stellar presence.

But it is the tiny chipmunk girl from the Twilight Saga, Anna Kendrick (I think she plays the annoying friend Jessica), that absolutely steals the show as the young hotshot.  I never knew she could act.  I think she’ll get a nomination as well and I wouldn’t be too surprised if she won.

If there is a complaint about Up in the Air, it’s that the film is a little flat.  Yes, there are ups and downs and it can get quite emotional, but there’s not much heart-thumping excitement. At 109 minutes, it’s definitely not a movie children would be able to sit through without getting restless.

Nevertheless, on the whole, Up in the Air is a quality movie that ticks most of the right boxes.  It’s unlikely to be one of those memorable films you’ll remember years down the track, but for now, at least, Up in the Air will come to mind when I think about the top films of the year.

4 out of 5 stars

[PS: Felt good to get that one out.  It's been a while since I reviewed a movie!]

Shopping for Electronics (and Toys) in Taipei!

January 23, 2010 in Best Of, Taiwan, Technology, Travel

Guang Hwa Electronic Market in Taipei - I was too excited and forgot to take photos - so I had to steal one online

Taiwan is THE place to be for the latest techno gadgets, laptops, computer parts, computer accessories, mobile phones and video games (and cool toys).

In terms of innovation and having the new, cool stuff, Taiwan isn’t quite as advanced as Japan, but it’s getting there.  The products are often the same, if not better quality than what you would find overseas.  And of course, the prices.  The prices are, if you know where to look, just a fraction of what you would expect to pay in most Western countries.  An added bonus is the long opening hours (often don’t close until 10pm or later).

So, where are the best places to find electronic goods (and cool toys) in Taiwan?

What’s going on with Heroes Season 4 (Volume 5)?

January 22, 2010 in Entertainment

I started watching Heroes right from the beginning.  Seasons 1 and 2 were awesome, but Season 3 started getting a bit old.

I recently started watching Season 4 (Volume 5: Redemption), and I still have a bit of catching up to do.  But seriously, what is the deal?  When did Heroes get so…’meh’?

I always thought the Sylar as Nathan thing at the end of Season 3 was a big mistake, and I think I am being proven right.  Matt Parkman has always been an annoying douche, but now even the normally likable Hiro is getting on my nerves.  And the whole Claire lesbo thing was just a ploy to score some viewers.

Oh, and don’t get me started on T-Bag, LOL.

I guess the writers kind of backed themselves into a corner by making certain characters too powerful, and now have no choice but the fudge things to make them ‘weaker’ or lose their minds so they aren’t at their full potential.  However, for some reason it just feels like things keep going in circles and there’s no real sense of direction.

I’m only about 6 eps in, so there is still a chance for things to turn around.  Hopefully it will, because I’m the kind of idiot who will keep watching no matter how bad things get (case in point: I still watch Smallville).

KFC’s Portuguese Egg Tarts!

January 22, 2010 in Food, Taiwan, Travel

One thing you don’t expect to find at a KFC is egg tarts.

But head into any KFC in Taiwan, and no joke, you can order Portuguese egg tarts.

And these aren’t just your everyday, run of the mill, Portuguese egg tarts.  Believe it or not, these tarts are the ‘same’ as the ones from the world famous Margaret’s Cafe e Nata in Macau.  Apparently, several years ago there was a massive boom in Portuguese egg tarts in Taiwan, and KFC bought the recipe off Margaret for a healthy lump sum.

To keep things interesting, KFC has made some ‘advancements’, such as the mochi and brown syrup egg tart, and my personal favourite, the ‘exploding’ custard egg tart (I saw some commercials of it on TV while I was there and apparently they were a great source of porn jokes).
