Mos Burger and Mr Donut!

January 28, 2010 in Food, Taiwan, Travel

Two of my favourite places in Japan are the chains Mos Burger (fast food restaurant) and Mr Donut (…donuts).

And in Taiwan, they have both!

Mos Burger

Mos Burger is one of the few places that actually has a burger after which the restaurant is named.  That’s right.  At Mos Burger you can order a Mos Burger.

But the best thing at Mos Burger is the Wafu Fried Chicken.  Not only is it tasty, it is surprisingly un-oily.  You can push your serviette into it and there’d be no oil stain!  And check out the clever Japanese holding wrapper.  You don’t even have to get your hands dirty.

Mr Donut

Mr Donut has awesome donuts.  The best thing about them is that they’re not overly sweet, which is rare for donuts.  And they come in a wide variety of flavours and styles – whether it’s chocolate or strawberry glaze or cream-filled centres or these weird ball-type donuts, Mr Donut has it all.

Yuan Shao BBQ Restaurant

Restaurant: Yuan Shao
Cuisine: BBQ set meals
Price: TWD 598 per head (+ 10% service charge)
Location: See below

If you are into DYI BBQs, then you can’t go past Yuan Shao BBQ Restaurant in Taiwan.

For just TWD 598 per person (with 10% service charge), you can enjoy an assortment of delicious courses sandwiched around a platter of meat you cook yourself on a grill built in to your table.

The quality of the food and service is truly exquisite.  Quite simply put, it is one of the best places you could ever go to for an enjoyable night out.

Each Course offers a variety of options to choose from (you only get to pick one).  I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Are Tennis Players Too Soft These Days?

January 28, 2010 in Tennis, Uncategorized

Are players like Novak Djokovic too soft?

This morning on TV, I heard one of the most ridiculous comments I’ve heard in a long time.

That the professional tennis players of today are too soft.

The commentator then complained about how players these days get injury timeouts and toilet breaks, and how footballers, who get banged up night in and night out, don’t (yeah, they just piss on the field!).  For players who earn millions of dollars a year (just the top players, really), shouldn’t they just suck it up and keep going?

Are my blog stats real?

January 27, 2010 in Blogging

For those just passing by or stumbled onto this blog, please leave a message.  Anything.  Just so I know you’re real.

You see, I recently started wondering where I was getting all these hits from.  From humble beginnings where this blog would get 50 hits on a good day, it has now gotten to a point where 1000+ is the norm.

But when I checked my stats, it appears I sometimes get massive traffic from just a couple of posts (usually my European travel or boxing ones).  Once I got almost 4000 hits in a day just on one of them.  It got me suspicious.  Where do these people come from?  Just how do they find this blog?

I tried searching on WordPress and Google, and rarely do any of my posts come up in keyword searches.  The only place where I got more luck was Google image searches.  Could these people just be looking for pictures?

I went further and registered with Clicky (since you can’t use Google Analytics on WordPress).  It appears most of my visitors are unique (as opposed to one person clicking a thousand times), but the average time they spend here is like 40 seconds.  WordPress swears by its stats system but I’m convinced something is fishy here.

So please, leave a message.  Tell me how you found this blog.  I’ll reward you with this John Wall mix tape.

Bull Demon King at the Shida Night Markets

January 26, 2010 in Food, Taiwan, Travel

Feel like delicious steak at reasonable prices?

Restaurant: Bull Demon King
Cuisine: Steak (Beef, Chicken, Lamb etc) and comes in set meals with salad, bread and soup
Price: Around TWD 200 per head for normal sets, up to TWD 300 for special sets
Location: No. 8, Lane 49, Shida Road (Shida Night Markets)
Opening Hours: 11:30am-2:30pm; 17:00pm-22:30pm
Contact: (02) 3365-2635

The Bull Demon King is one of the key characters of Journey to the West, best captured by the TV show, Monkey Magic.  It also happens to be the name of an awesome cheap steak joint at the Shida Night Markets in Taipei.

The Shida Night Markets is a hot spot for university students, especially those from the nearby National Taiwan Normal University (don’t ask me why this university is more ‘normal’ than the others…), which has a very high ratio of foreign students.  Walking around at night, it’s not unusual to hear people speaking English.

The markets don’t have a whole lot of stuff to buy, but there is plenty of food.  And from what I have tasted dare there, dare I say Shida ranks right up there amongst the other night markets in Taipei.

Anyway, Bull Demon King has an outdoor store in the middle of the Shida Night Markets, but apparently it has done so well it opened up a proper restaurant (with waiters and air-conditioning and all) in one of the side alleyways nearby.

Bull Demon King is cheap and it is delicious.  For under TWD 200 per person, you can get a full meal set with unlimited refill iced tea, salad, bread, soup and a main course.  Most people either get the beef steak or the chicken steak, which comes with spaghetti noodles and a fried egg, and is served on a sizzling platter.
